As we head into the All Star break, could it be any clearer that something is seriously wrong with Tim Lincecum? It’s not bad enough we’re
getting smoked by one of the worst offenses in all of baseball, but Lincecum is the difference,
literally, between second place and basically running away with the division:

That stark, surreal sentence is not opinion but a statistical fact. When Lincecum’s first half mercifully ended in the fourth inning of Sunday’s 13-2 loss to the Pirates, his ERA stood at 6.42, the highest of the 101 starters with enough innings to qualify for the league leaderboards.
…. Lincecum’s road ERA stands at 9.00 – 47 earned runs in 47 innings. No wonder Bochy plans to start him at home after the break.
Not to mention, a pretty mediocre 6-7 record against the division leaders we just ran through. That includes the sweep against the Dodgers, so really, it was a 3-7 run against the rest of the best.

I don’t think Lincecum’s problems are drug related; if they are then it’s a well kept secret. After his little pot bust I’m guessing that they test him for drugs fairly frequently as a condition of his contract, particularly since he’s under-performing.
Personally I think he’s overworked. As a strikeout pitcher he throws a lot of pitches and he’s thrown around 220 innings in each of the last four seasons. That, combined with his small size and crazy delivery…the Giants may have broken him.
Then of course he’s under a lot of pressure, performing at that level, and he’s making the big bucks which can only add to the pressure.
It’s all speculation. He isn’t saying what’s wrong and the Giants aren’t telling anybody. I just think for the sake of the team and in the hope of salvaging Tim they take him out of the rotation – they’ve given him a lot of time to make a correction – and see if resting him and maybe fattening him up a bit doesn’t help. Get his dad involved (if that isn’t a problem) and maybe have him throw some simulated games or some AAA games, see if he doesn’t respond.
He may be done. We may have seen his career come and go. I hope not, but it’s a possibility. At this point though he isn’t a viable starter. Unfortunately the Giants will probably continue to send him out there, and if he isn’t done yet, that may finish him.

I gotta be honest. The only comparison I have for what Timmy is going through is Dwight Gooden, and it was drugs that derailed him. Timmy is clearly and obviously a candidate for drug problems –and I am no anti-drug guy in any way– but his history with weed is certainly a concern if you’re looking at the kind of career derail he is going through.
Is this fixable? Who knows. So far, it doesn’t look likely. His breakdown is total, above and beyond his results, and apparently a complete mystery.

Lincecum is giving up earned runs at a rate that the Giants meager offense cannot hope to compensate for. In terms of wanting to win games and get to the World Series there is no way to justify starting Lincecum, but we are going to hear spin from the front office for the rest of the season because there is so much money involved.
I really hope Timmy can get his shit together and get back in form, but I don’t expect it. I think he is either gassed, injured, or mentally fucked up (or any combination of the three). If I ran the zoo he would have 4-6 weeks off for rehab, conditioning and counseling. Leaving him in the rotation hasn’t fixed his problem(s) and it is crippling the team’s chances at a playoff spot.
