Matt Cain continues to get no run support, the story of his career, as he lost 2-1 to the Marlins last night. As I wrote a while back, games like these are exac
tly why I speculated that Cain might consider leaving the Giants. A Hall of Fame career could very well be in the process of being derailed by the lack of run support he’s received since he gotten to the Show.
UPDATE: More hard luck as
the Giants lose Pablo Sandoval for the second year in a row to a broken hamate bone in his hand. Geez. This team seems doomed to squander another year of top-flight pitching as their offense completely tanks, and key players sit and watch. Where’s Stan Conte when you need him?

Man these are some dark days for giants fans.
We have a minor league infield right now. Freddie, Pablo, Mota, Affeldt, Huff… This team is in for some rough times but if they can only flounder around at .500 they might have a change to pull something out of this season.
Mota, man that was is a real disappointment.

My favorite comment from Giants’ broadcasters and fans this year: “Brandon Crawford hasn’t yet proved he can hit major league pitching.” I suppose this is true, in the same way it is true that Barry Zito hasn’t yet proved he can throw a 100 MPH fastball, and that Paris Hilton hasn’t yet proved that her intellect matches Albert Einstein’s. Wouldn’t you say that Brandon Crawford has pretty clearly proved he CAN’T hit major league pitching? Here are his BA/OBP/SLG lines, for every team he has played for above A-ball:
2009 at AA Norwich: .258/.290/.365
2010 at AA Richmond: .241/.341/.375
2011 at AAA Fresno: .234/.291/.327
2011 in NL: Giants: .204/.288/.296
2012 in NL: Giants: .211/.231/.342
So Crawford is a far below-average hitter for AA or AAA, and possibly the worst hitter in the majors. As to the argument that he is still young and developing, he is 25 years old and probably as good as he will ever be. There is massive evidence he can’t hit major league pitching, and there is no evidence – none – that he ever will. It’s just wishful thinking.
On the other hand, perhaps we all need to view our lives through the “haven’t yet proved” lens. I’m not an ordinary-looking man with a modest income, I’m simply a man who hasn’t yet proved he will be a billionaire, or that he will look like Brad Pitt. Yup, that makes me feel better.
Hang in there Brandon, it’s true that you haven’t yet proved that you will be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, but keep trying…
“Red-hot Zito looking to shut down the Marlins” is the caption over at the Giants site. I read that and the food in my stomach congealed into a hard lump.
After last night’s wonderful clutch hitting and the one lonely run that was scored by Sandoval (a solo shot, naturally) my lunch is not the only thing I’m having trouble digesting.
While the Giants are currently third place in the NL West standings, their offense is a solid fourth. They are 4th in runs scored, they are 4th in OPS, and by whatever mysterious methods used to lay odds in Vegas they are 4th. Although it is still early in the season, one is tempted to ask “Is our batters learning?” The answer, according to Greg over at McCovey Chronicles, is no.
That place is one big resource-slow-loading pile of signature files and pop-ups, posted by guys/women whose empirical knowledge of baseball is pretty much a minus, and couldn’t string together an original thought if somebody blocked them from baseball reference, fangraphs or sfgate/bagley. Horrible place. Used to be fun years ago. It resembles a local version of espn message boards -occupy fruit stands edition.
