…. Wheels? Off.

Tim Lincecum finally succumbed to the pressure of having to shut out your opponent every time out, falling to the hapless Chicago Cubs 7-0 tonight. Wow. After stifling one more team inning after inning, it finally dawned on Timmy what we’ve been talking about for most of the last two months…. That this Giants offense has fallen to the depths of Hades. Watching journeyman Randy Wells throw a two-hit shutout against him, Lincecum surely had to wonder about the no-hitters he would have on his resume if only he got to pitch against the orange and black.

Carlos Beltran has to rank as one of the biggest trade deadline busts of all time, with his fucking completely worthless 1 home run and 4 runs batted in in 70 at bats. Way to go, striking out your first two times up with a man on base. Awesome.

Pray to God Zack Wheeler doesn’t turn out to be a star, because it already feels like another Double Play moment.

“Unfortunately, nobody’s been good enough to hang onto a job or be consistent enough to stay established in the lineup.” – Brian Sabean

  23. trantor says:

Rowand DFA’d? Finally, sadly. The Giants lost a couple good players from 40 man roster limitations, guess they could not afford to lose any more?

Cabrera won’t last the season either. Crawford is far superior defensively, with at least as good a (terrible) bat. But Crawford has some potential.

As I said previously, next step is DFA Cabrera, then release Bochy/Sabean, and figure out how to dump ZIto, or release him. Its another roster spot that the team cannot afford. (hopefully this off season.)

The Giants could have been good enough to compete this year, had they had any of 20-25 other GM’s in this sport. Yes, I am laying this on Sabean, who I have not liked in 10 years, despite winning the WS. I give that to luck and Dick Tidrow, not from ANY amazing moves by Sabean. His best move in the past ten years was luck, getting Ross, probably.

  24. Eric says:

With the DFA admission of failure on Rowand and Tejada, when does somebody start taking responsibility for the list of ridiculous acquisitions?

  25. ScottS says:

Maybe I was a bit too easy on Beltran in my previous post.

With runners in scoring position he is 3-20 with 3 rbi’s. A robust .150 avg. and .300 ops. Striking out 7 times and hitting into 3 dp’s. Fucking pathetic out of the 3rd slot…or any slot for that matter. He has only two walks since joing the Gigantes.

Is it just me…or does he have that miserable depressed look always on his face. Like he’s doing us all a favor for showing up.

Beltran has brought that great attitude he infected the Mets with along with him. Good riddance.

This is the worst baseball in SF since the early 80′s.

No need for further comment. It’s nice out…and refuse to ruin my day this early on the Gigantes.

  26. Robert says:

I have been a consistent advocate of Schierhotz.
Whether you like him or not you cannot deny that he plays that horribly difficult right field and picks it.

And he has a cannon for an arm.

    An accurate cannon.

I have defended him against so many people who have said “Hey, he hits for shit.”
Big deal. That’s not the point. Nobody on this team hits for shit. He would be the greatest asset on the planet if anybody else on this pathetic team could hit for shit.

He is the template for the best guy to play right field at AT&T Park. If he hit better, sure it would be great.

I don’t know what the architect was thinking when right field was designed. Last season I suggested they should round out the outfield and build real bullpens. I didn’t get any traction on that idea.

But you can see that it takes a specialist, a really special talent, to play right field at AT&T.

And not some fat fucking old slow under-motivated piece of shit like Carlos Beltran who has nothing to lose and is ready to retire. Welcome to the fucking San Francisco Giants.

Normally that would be the way to end a rant, but I’m not done.
All of the pitching is going to leave at the first chance they get.
    Say good-bye.

The horrible management by Sabean and Bochey has pretty much assured this. So sorry, but if you were world class talent you would leave this organization too.

  27. ScottS says:

    Unc Joe,

Best post you wrote the other day I’ve read in some time. Spot on on all points of contention.

The Beltran move was poor…mainly because it Fucked with a winning chemistry and displaced one of the best RF in baseball in Schierholtz. Beltran is a line drive gap hitter…and was never going to bring to the table offensively what we are giving up on defense.

Before the Beltran move…the Gigantes were winning one run games with Great Pitching, good defense, speed, and desire(heart). They somehow got the job done. They knew how t win. That chemistry was priceless.

Do not blame beltran as much as I blame Sabean and Bochy. Beltran is a player used to playing on losing clubs. He is not a team leader…and could not deal with the pressure of having to be the #1 guy. Posey is special…and he was that to the Gigantes. Regardless of age or experience. A born leader.

Dumping Burriss and Crawford ruined the speed and defense…and bringing in Cabrera makes no sense. A total joke. Behind closed doors you know the pichers wish Crawford was out there. Cabrera has hands of stone…and has accounted for 3-4 losses with his glove alone. Brings little to nothing at the plate. Total downside.

Rowand has been a nightmare for years. How he even is on the 40 man roster is beyond me. No further comment.

Play Crawford the rest of the year at short and mix Burriss in the line-up.

Truthfully, I’m amazed we’ve won as many as we have with this collection.

Blame starts at the top…and trickles down.

    House cleaning is in order.

  28. phillyjoe says:

“Brian Sabean rolled the dice yesterday, pulling off the biggest trade deadline move of the season, when he dealt the seemingly untradeable Zach Wheeler for Carlos Beltran. Beltran is having a terrific season, and instantly becomes the most productive hitter on the team.

I like the deal, although I would’ve preferred Jose Reyes (younger, faster, etc.). Beltran gives the Giants something they’ve been missing all year, a proven, consistent power threat.

Kudos to Sabean for realizing that this team has a legitimate shot at repeating, and making a bold move.”

So, was it, or was it not a good move?

  29. E says:

    Heh. Tools

    No hit
    No run
    No catch
    No throw
    No hit for power

A pitching staff and the ghosts of the Seattle Pilots.

I suppose I should be upset, but I’m not. I anticipated exactly this. The Giants coming into last year had the worst offense in MLB every year going back to 2005 until 2010 when they managed to crawl up to 17th place. They are who we thought and more importantly who we know they are… a collection of Sabean-Signature models free-agents. Old. Slow. Brittle. Powerless. And that has been the trademark of Giants acquistions in the post-Baker era.

Old guys. Slow guys. Brittle guys. Guys with no power

I like Jim Hendry personally. He is one of the good guys. But he has been passed by and had front office difficulties with the Tribune ownership group. No matter. 3 post-season appearances in nine seasons was not good enough.

The Giants have had one post-season in the last 9 seasons. And each of the following was given a $Million contract at some point to be impact position players and/or starters

Aaron Rowand, Ryan Garko, Aubrey Huff, Jose Castillo, Miguel Tejada, Dave Roberts, Freddy Sanchez, Ryan Klesko, Carlos Beltran, Mark Sweeney, Mark DeRosa, Steve Finley, Moises Alou, Benji Molina, Edgar Renteria, Omar Vizquel, Juan Uribe, Jose Vizcaino, Jose Guillen, Eliezer Alfonzo, Rich Aurilia, Mike Matheny, and Cody Ross, Randy Winn, Barry Bonds.

Other than Bonds, who has been anything but a disappointment most of their time here?

    • Santa Claustrophobia says:

I’m pretty sure Alou was a decent pick up. Old and brittle, sure, but either of his two seasons would make him the team leader now. A couple others like Vizquel and Sanchez have provided value. And it’s good you list Matheny. I mean what a selfish jerk getting a concussion like that, right?

Sabean’s ability to recognise quality hitting talent may be suspect, but a stopped clock is still right twice a day. And it’s nice of you to give him credit for Bonds.

The Giants have been an old and brittle team practically Sabean’s whole tenure, but it wasn’t until 2005 that the hitting started to disappear. So how good was Sabean for his first seven years? When the team was hitting and, more or less, winning?

      • E says:

Well, I make my case here. Its pretty telling the differences in the post-Baker era. Basement dwellers since 2005, climbed out of the ooze to 17th last year and back into the LaBrea Tar pits.

        http://wherehaveyougonejoe.com/public_html/article.php?story=20110831074854757

I won’t quibble about Moises under the circumstances. He came over solely because of Felipe. It was a similar formula that worked with Barry and Bobby Bonds when Bake came over. Baker and Cepeda and Bobby all go back a lot of years together. Actually, Cepeda was one of Baker’s mentors in Atlanta. Bobby as we all know, had finally conquered the demon alcohol, but those are the kinds of wounds that leave permanent scar tissue, and it took a gargantuan effort by Magowan, Baer, and last but not least, the wonderful and under-recognized Harlan and Sue Burns.

Life’s complicated. So’s baseball. And thanks for the feedback

        E

  30. DonK says:

The wheels have indeed come off, and the Giants are headed for the ditch of a barely-.500 seasom.

Lincecum finally cracked last night under the burden of no support; that the Giants could get just 2 hits off Randy Wells is a disgrace. I don’t think a lot of Bochy as a manager (even with a WS title), but there’s only so much he can do with the drek Sabean has handed him.

As a group, the Giants need a philosophical change offensively. Their hacktastic attitude is what made Billy Beane successful — the Giants will not work pitchers for walks or even long counts. Check the Yankees and Red Sox — they have a clue as to what the strike zone looks like and will make pitchers throw strikes. The Giants? No need to throw strikes — they’ll get themselves out.

Also — have you noticed that this is an awful defensive team. As un-athletic as you could imagine. if you’re not going to hit, you’d better be above-average defensively, and the Giants are not.

Yes, the injuries have hurt. But maybe they will force Sabean to get rid of some of his hackers (and the coaches that enable them) before 2012. We can only hope.

  31. Gman says:

For the first time this season, I turned the game off after the second homer, knowing the Giants could not come back. Uncle Joe, I thank you for yesterday’s comment.
