…. Wild Ride

The Giants surged into the Wild Card lead with last night’s 7-4 win over the D’backs. Even without the red-hot Buster Posey, the offense continued to make me look like an idiot. Aubrey Huff hit two home runs, and Andres Torres got yet another big hit. All in all, the team is playing as well as they have in years.

I had an epiphany during the ninth. Brian WIlson, who looks like he wants to rip someone’s arms out when he’s on the mound, finally rang a bell in my head. When he’s in that zone, he looks like Max Cady, the DeNiro character from the movie Cape Fear.

Well, I confused $ with %. $48.5 million for those four. Off by 1.2.

  8. Robert says:

Wow. The Giants are doing great.
If you look at the payroll you will see that the guys making the most money are either sitting on the bench, where they belong, or they are a hole on the field.

    Let’s look at the money.

Top spot, Barry Zito, who is having the best year he has ever had as a Giant, is making $18.5 million dollars this year. His record: 8-5. His ERA is 3.45

Next: Aaron Rowand, $12 million dollars this season.

Edgar Renteria: $9 million dollars this season.

Pat Burell: $9 million dollars this season.

Tim Lincecum: $8 million dollars this season.

Mark DeRosa: $6 million dollars this season.

Freddy Sanchez: $6 million dollars this season.

Jeremy Affeldt: $4.5 million dollars this season.

That’s $73 million dollars. Or to put it another way, over 75% of the entire Giants payroll.

Let’s drill down a bit and look at those top four guys, who make ~50% of the total payroll.

    Zito: 19.2%
    Rowand: 12.5%
    Renteria: 9%
    Burell: 9%

That’s forty nine million seven hundred thousand dollars and change. Those four guys are scooping up half of the entire payroll for the Giants this season. Name the superstar.

If you picked Randy Johnson, ($8 million in 2009) you’re a year late. Actually about a decade late.

Are these players bad? No, not really. Are they worth the money they’re making? No. Not even close.

Who signed them? Where is the superstar? For $49.7 million dollars, couldn’t the Giants have signed a superstar?

If you were to wrap these four guys into a package and try to trade for a superstar you would be laughed at. But $49.7 million per year? You would be able to sign Roy Halladay and have $29.7 million dollars per year left over to sign ANYBODY you can name. No player in baseball would turn you down. Not one. You want Albert Pujols? He’s only making $16 million dollars per year. Think about it. Anybody you can name. Zito, Rowand, Renteria, Burrell. Are these names on your list?

    • +mia says:

The Rays are picking up Burrell’s salary except for half a season of the MLB minimum.

Its a nice little 2 out 3 gig they’ve been running in the month of July. The question is whether they can sustain it, and whether the Padres who are matching them win for win will stumble.

      I’m skeptical. September will tell.

      • Robert says:

If you take Burrell out of that mix you are left with Zito, Rowand and Renteria. $39.5 Millions. Choir. Preaching. I know.
I’m enjoying Posey. Not since Will Clark. And all that.

Personally I think this team is hopeless while Bochy and Sabean are in control. Bochy should give Ishikawa his wrist watch after Travis saved his ass today.

      • uncle joe mccarthy says:

the friars are for real….and are doing it with a third of the giants salary

which shows what a org can do with the right gm and manager

as for the giants…look at how the baseball gods are making sure that sabean cannot squander farm talent for avg mlb talent

        dejesus….out for the year

        hart…headed for the dl

the org does need a lefty rp…but they aint gonna find it in the bigs…so they will be forced to use the farm system (not sure who they can go to, the guys in fresno are faltering)

im just enjoying watching posey….best player in a generation

not sure why they are insisting on limiting madbaum’s innings…that kid is strong….and smart

ti is coming into his own too

a little disappointed in nate….he needs to work on his swing during the offseason

would like the team to get to the post this season…but if not, im ok with it

        • ScottS says:

          Unc Joe,

The Baseball Gods are definitely smiling upon us. We can win the Wild Card or catch the Pads with this current team…and if Nate once again finds his groove…this is going to be fun to watch. I haven’t felt this way in ten years about this club…and the chemistry is amazing. Would not mess with this at all.

Realize Sanchez and Renteria are over paid….but, am pleased with their production. Sanchez is playing as good a 2b as we’ve had in years…and Renteria is playing well. I admit Renteria should be a spot starter…but, he’s making the routine plays….and most of the time…is outs are productive.

Only joke on roster is Rowand…and there is nothing we can do…except hope he comes through in spot starts and ph roles. He is unmoveable.

Like I’ve been saying all along….Posey is beyond description.

With our staff…I will be disappointed if we do not at least get the Wild Card.

          Stay Hot Gigantes,

          • uncle joe mccarthy says:

i think rowand will play tomorrow as he did today…he eats up marlins pitching

which is a good thing….maybe the org can send him back east before the trade deadline…the mets need an of, and the philis are hurting toot

i am enjoying watching this team

posey aint the thrill…but he affects a lineup the same way will did

i know the mlb will find his hole….but they havent yet…which is amazing…and he is good behind the plate (except for the fast ball call against uggla)

maybe with his divorce behind him and the work he did with his bro over the break, panda can get back to hitting too

like i said, this team may not end up making the post…but they have been fun to watch and have a very good future now

and even +mia has to agree with that

            • ScottS says:

              Unc Joe,

What has really improved…and for the most part in a very quiet manner…is our set up relief in the pen. Romo has been nails…Affeldt is back, and I think Ray is a great addition.

Posey is no “Thrill ” yet…but, he may one day rewrite many Gigantes records. Spot on…how he makes everyone around him better. He already has a veteran’s sense about him. He’s beyond description. Hopefully, the league doesn’t find the holes for the rest of the year.

What I didn’t realize about Huff…is how athletic he is. I was dead wrong about him…and gladly eating a steady diet of crow. His plate presence has rubbed off on the whole line-up.

Hope you’re right about Rowand…and blows me away how he destroys the Fish. Was hoping the White Sox might want him for the second half…but, would be nice if the Mets had some interest.

Think +mia is enjoying the ride…just like us. He knows the Gigantes as well as anyone…and appreciates good baseball. He realizes this is special…but, he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop. I’m telling you guys…not going to happen. I believe there is something really great going on…and even in spite of Bochy…this team is making the playoffs.

Hope you’re right about the Panda. He needs to be more disciplined….and that starts in your personal life. Definitely needs to drop some weight…and hopefully the divorce is behind him.

Actually look forward to catching each game.

              Stay Hot Gigantes.

      we arent paying burrell

      got him off of waivers

  9. Aaron B. says:

Even though the team’s been playing well the past few weeks, Sabean should still look for another good (or great, if available) bat for the stretch run. No time to start getting comfortable…

  10. +mia says:

Yes. They have had a very nice 3 week run here in July. Along with Oakland, Florida, Cubs, Yankees, and White Sox, they have won the first 20 games in July outscoring everybody in MLB and doing it while playing all but 3 games on the road. Very nice.

Its going to take more than 3 weeks of 14-6 ball after 5 years of Sabean/Bochy/Alou oldschool stubborness before I start referring to myself as an idiot for not predicting guys like Torres and Huff would have career years, and Posey would be doing an imitiation of Joe Mauer right out of the box.

Enjoy it while you can. I am.

  11. ScottS says:

    John,

Nice to see a positive slant…and think everyone on this site as a collective whole…are eating crow on Huff(I am). He’s having a career year…and if he played in any other venue than At&t…would be 40-50 hrs this year. Sabean finally hit one.

Torres as been awesome…and Posey is beyond description.

Always said w/o Molina and Rowand…this team would win. Posey is mind blowing…and his arm is the deterant our staff needed to stop the running…since they do such a poor job holding runners. Definitely saves at least one run a game.

Another reason to despise Rowand. Leads NL in strikeout to walk ratio for all players over 250 ab’s.

Romo has been consistently good…and Affeldt is back in form. No one wants to play us right now. And in a short series…we match up better than anyone in NL.

This team has good chemistry…and must admit…for the first time in years…are fun and exciting to watch. We’re never out of any game.

    Enjoying the ride…

    Stay Hot Gigantes.

  12. howard in nyc says:

positivity and maybe even optimism from john. i don’t know what to think. i do think it was pretty cool to see an opposing player hit for the cycle in a losing effort.

  13. giantsrainman says:

Welcome Back John. I am glad you have seen the light and escaped from the Dark Side.
