…. Rebirth

Barry Zito started a season 4-0 for the first time in his career, after yesterday’s 5-2 win over the Rockies. The win pushed the Giants to 13-9, their best start in four years.

This team has enough pitching to win a championship, right now. This team, right now, needs one big bat. That’s all. One real hitter. RIGHT NOW.

Who is that hitter? I think you all know what player I would love to see the team make a behind-the-scenes, blockbuster, change the landscape of the entire National League play for:

…. I said it before, and I’ll say it again, Prince Fielder is the best young player in baseball. Today, he became the youngest player ever to reach 50 home runs in a season, supplanting Willie Mays, who did it in his age 24 season. Fielder is 23, and looks to be a superstar for a long time. If only the Giants had a player with anything even close to the kind of upside Fielder seems to have.

I wrote that three years ago. Can you imagine Fielder at first and Sandoval at third? That is a dream team at the corners for a decade. Fielder’s situation in Milwaukee appears probematic, mostly due to the outrageous $125 million dollar extension the Phillies gave to Ryan Howard. Even John Shea agrees with me:

…. first basemen Prince Fielder and Adrian Gonzalez will be free agents after the 2011 season and were long shots to re-sign with their teams even before Howard’s stunning deal.

Now that the bar is set far higher, the question is: When will Fielder and Gonzalez be traded? Before the July 31 deadline, with their trade value peaking? The offseason? The following July?

For the Giants, it’s worth monitoring. If it’s midseason, and they’re serious about advancing through the playoffs, and their offense is lagging, and Aubrey Huff isn’t proving to be a difference-maker, they’d be wise to enter the conversation.

Neither Fielder nor Gonzalez makes much in his current contract, relatively speaking. Fielder gets $6.5 million this year and is eligible for arbitration after the season. Gonzalez makes $4.75 million in 2010 with a $5.5 million club option for 2011.

Put either in the middle of the Giants’ lineup, and opponents suddenly would fear more than the pitching.

Madison Bumgardner and a handful of prospects might be enough to pry Fielder away from Milwaukee, right now. Now is when Sabean should be approaching Doug Melvin. Now, before the season moves forward, before Milwaukee knows whether they will contend. Strike while the iron is hot, says the old saw.

The Giants have the best pitching in baseball. Right now. Fortune favors the bold. Be bold, Brian Sabean, Bill Neukom and the rest of the managing partners.

Don’t tell me you’re thinking of buying the Golden State Warriors. What? If you have that kind of extra cash, spend it on your baseball team. Buy the best young hitter available. You got millions of dollars burning a hole in your pocket? Spend it on bringing a championship to San Francisco for the first time ever.

You put Fielder at first, Sandoval at third, and Posey behind the plate, and the roster of wanna be’s, never-wases and has-beens that Sabean is so fond of are suddenly palatable. Three dynamic, young stud hitters surrounded by some relatively inexpensive, league average hitters, and this team can win a title. This team can win multiple titles with a big three like that.

Be bold, Brian.

UPDATE: 14-9. Seriously. Make a move, Sabean. You cannot allow another season to roll by without taking advantage f this pitching staff.

Front Office Mouthpiece Goes After Sanchez

As uncle joe linked above, the beat writer for the Bay Area News Group and unofficial Baer-Sabean press-secretary unloaded the Giants’ pre-emptive attack on Freddy Sanchez. To save you the time of reading through the attempts to make Sanchez’ non-performing contract the gist is this:

The trade and subsequent free-agent signing to a two year contract was a good trade at the time. Sanchez is malingering. Its not Sabean’s fault.

Look for this to be the constant drumbeat. Like the ridiculous Sweeney-Bonds Greenie non-story that was used to deflect attention from yet another disastrous front office off-season a few years back.

But for now, he’s leaving every impression of someone who’s being ultra-cautious, and perhaps ultra-fearful. That’s an impression he can only break one way: by getting back on the field and producing.

Shit like that only gets written in msm when Baer-Sabean-Bochy green lights it. That has been the m.o. in the past. Not that anybody should have any disagreement with that observation, only that when ridiculous deals like Sanchez and DeRosa unfold ridiculously like most of Sabean’s deals for has-beens do, only the players are held accountable for the shortcomings and:

NEVER THE FUCKING IDIOT THAT INSTIGATED AND CONSUMMATED THE FUCKING MALADROIT TRANSACTIONS IN THE FIRST PLACE!

And thats’ why guys like Bagg and the other tool at SF Gate have zero credibility.

    • uncle joe mccarthy says:

in baggs defense, he considers the role of a beat writer to report, not analyze or critique

he has been very good at breaking stories and reporting what goes on behind the scenes

in his blog, he occasionally critiques, but im sure he doesnt want to end up like krueger, totally on the outs of the org and thereby not being able to do the job he is paid for.

      • +mia says:

He claims that all he is doing is “reporting” out the facts. And that’s what every fucking douchebag in msm says about their writing. “Hey I’m just the messenger…don’t blame me if Bonds is under federal investigation.”

Those are weasel words used to rationalize their biased, agenda driven so-called “reporting” Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.

Reporting: A packet of OTC antihistamines was alleged to have been found in the Giants clubhouse. All antihistamines, including over-the-counter varieties, are prohibited substances under the rules of Major League Baseball. There was no comment from the Giants nor any of the players or clubhouse staff, and no further action has been reported as forthcoming.

Agenda driven Douchebag “Reporter.”: Barry Bonds, who has been enmeshed in a swirl of controversy since the steroid scandal broke was alleged to have amphetamines in his locker according to a letter submitted to the Giants Fronts Office from the Commissioner’s office, and acquired from confidential sources by this reporter.

Bond’s who has drawn the ire of fans in visiting cities everywhere has been called a distraction by more than one Giants player who has spoken only on condition of anonymity. This comes as no surprise to those who have visited the Giants Clubhouse where Bonds has three lockers, a recliner and his own television. There has been widespread speculation, that Bonds Grand Jury Indictment has been such a distraction, that he has prevented the Giants from acquiring the services of free agents who are reluctant to play on the same club as Bonds.

Its all bullshit and its been going on so long and perpetrated by so many msm turds, that most people don’t even recognize it anymore.

Giants fans deserve so much better than what they get.

A closer look at D. Aristophanes’ list

    Carlos Lee, LF b. 6/20/76.
Astros have signed through 2012: $18.5MM. Perennial slow starter, Lee has also lost a step, but is a consistent hitter over his career. Full no trade clause so don’t hold your breath until his contract is up. At which point he will be almost 36 years old.

    Lance Berkman, OF & FB b. 2/10/76.
Astros have 2011 club option: $15MM. Slow start after arthroscopic knee surgery in the off-season.
Conditioning may lead to return to form. Currently suffering from groin injury. Slow to heal because he is old. A 34 year old five time All Star in decline.

    Hunter Pence, RF b. 4/13/83.
Astros hold one year contract 2010: $3.5MM. Off to a slow start in 2010. All Star in 2009.
Born in Texas, went to school in Texas, plays pro ball in Texas. Good speed, durable, above average in the field. Called “Rookie Phenom Hunter Pence” until he was derailed by a bone chip in his wrist. Nothing but upside but can he be bought out of Texas?

    Grady Sizemore, CF b. 7/2/82.
Indians have 2012 club option: $8.5MM. Had arthroscopic surgery on elbow in the off-season. Performance at plate has fallen off dramatically while trying to learn to shorten his swing. If Sizemore recovers the Indians will never let him go as he is a fan favorite and core player. If he doesn’t recover then he is finished.

    Travis Hafner, DH & 1B b. 6/3/77.
Indians have 2013 club option: $13MM. Had shoulder surgically repaired 18 months ago. May be recovered. Has stolen seven bases in nine years so he is not what you would call fast. He is almost 34 years old so what you see is what you get: a declining DH with good power.

    Nick Markakis, RF b. 11/7/83.
Orioles have 2015 club option: $17.5MM. First round draft pick. Rookie of the Year 2006. Lifetime OPS+ 120. You might be able to pry him out of the Orioles system but he is a core player for their team.

    Miguel Tejada, SS & 3B b. 5/25/74.
Orioles hold one year contract 2010: $6MM. Perennial All Star and AL MVP in 2002. Tejada is being played at 3B for first time in his major league career where he is making errors. He is about to turn 36 In 2007 he suffered a broken wrist and the last two seasons led the majors grounding into double plays.

    Garrett Atkins, 3B, 1B & DH b. 12/12/79.
Orioles have 2011 club option: $8.5MM. Losing power and never had speed. Non-tendered by the Rockies after 2009. His best year was 2006.

    Adam Jones, CF b. 8/1/85.
Orioles hold one year contract 2010: $0.465MM. All Star and Gold Glove in 2009. Inconsistent but young with a lot of potential. He suffered an ankle injury in 2009 which affected his numbers.

    Jose Guillen, RF & DH b. 5/17/76.
Royals have contract through 2010: $12MM. Aging veteran moved to DH. Streaky hitter. Slow runner. Not to be considered for a role in NL.

    Andrew McCutchen, CF b. 10/10/86.
Pirates hold one year contract 2010: $0.4225MM. Fast, young, with improving fielding and “lifetime” OPS+ 120. The Pirates ownership being what it is he might be obtainable for a new set of Ping clubs.

    Josh Willingham, LF b. 2/17/79.
Nationals hold one year contract 2010: $4.6MM. Average speed with lifetime OPS+ 120. Streaky.
Willingham is looking for a multi-year contract. Went to the Nats in a 2 for 3 trade from the Marlins who have gone with the younger Chris Coghlan.

    Adam Dunn, LF & 1B b. 11/9/79.
Nationals hold contract through 2010: $12MM. Lost a step. Lifetime OPS+ 132. Strikes out a lot.
Dunn has a reputation for dogging it on the field and swinging for the stands.

    Nyjer Morgan, OF b. 6/2/80.
Nationals hold one year contract 2010: $0.4265MM. Fast as a speeding bullet. Good leadoff hitter. A San Francisco native, Morgan was traded by the Pirates to the Nats, which is not a great career trajectory. Good outfielder, not much power.

he genius of sabean and the lies that the org tells us

    http://www.mercurynews.com/giants-headlines/ci_15017790?nclick_check=1#article_comments

derosa cant hit because his wrist is still weak….surprise!!!!!!!!!

so batting him in different spots in the lineup means nada….12 mil for a scrap pile reject

2 weeks ago we were told that freddie would be back in 2 weeks….now he is set to start rehab games in a week…after a team reeval

dont care what he has done at extended, he will need 2 weeks of full time play….so he aint coming back till june 1….and then, who cares

uribe has been doing better than fine at 2nd and ss….downs is proving himself….another fa waste by the genius gm

    • ScottS says:

      Unc Joe,

All great points. DeRosa is the biggest joke on the active roster. Why he continues to get ab’s(anywhere in line-up) is beyond me. No hit-no run-no field-no power-no arm. Not even a one tool player. But, definitely a complete tool. Torres and Bowker should be platooning in left. DeRosa is just the second coming of Garko. As for Freddie…no comment. Pretty much speaks for itself. Lucky to get 200 abs this year.

On the bright side…Benji has been carrying his weight(literally)…and Uribe has been amazing.

Romo should not be in the set-up position…too predictable. Runsler…is flat out nasty.

Even with Bochy and Sabean being their normal incompetent fucking idiots…this team does compete…and with one bat can take the West.

      • uncle joe mccarthy says:

i think the prob with using runzler and affeldt in tandem is that they are both lefties

i like romo…the kid is twisted

lets not forget that he gave up dingers to two very good hitters (even though manny just got k’d by a high a guy in his first rehab start)

i really dont get the pitch calling by bengie when romo was faciing uggla

i say give the kid a few more shots

if mota keeps going the way he is, he might end up being the rightie setup guy (but watch for him to fade, as he did as a dodger)

bengie proves that he can still hit, and bam bam has done a hell of a job working with him on pitch selection…his only problem is his speed

uribe is proving what everyone was pointing out at the end of last season….having uribe makes the freddy deal a total joke

        • ScottS says:

          Unc Joe,

Maybe I pulled the trigger on Romo too early. Just needs to quit throwing that back up slider…or wait until a two strike count to show it for the first time. He might be one of only two pitchers that throws it.

What the fuck is DeRosa still doing in the line-up…experiment over please.

Still think Runsler could be utilized in late innings. Hell of a nice problem we have this year. This staff is unbelievable.

We may be able to get a bat on the cheap near the break…no need to empty the bank for one now.

As for Freddie…what a fucking joke he is. Bringing him back might blow all the chemistry on this team.

Zito is nails…better late than never. He might actually make his contract worthy this year,

          Stay hot Gigantes.

  4. Jesus, I sound like Sabean — going after veterans who cost too much and are old and tired … sorry

  5. Fielder probably isn’t getting pried off the Brewers, except for a lot. A really lot. Still looking at Nats, Orioles, ‘Stros, Royals and Pirates right now … the first only because they’re the Nats and management knows they will revert to form eventually.

Everybody else is ‘in contention’ at this point and won’t trade. That leaves us with the bats of:

    Carlos Lee
    Lance Berkman
    Hunter Pence
    Grady Sizemore
    Travis Hafner
    Nick Markakis
    Miguel Tejada
    Garret Atkins
    Adam Jones
    Jose Guillen
    Andrew McCutcheon
    Josh Willingham
    Adam Dunn
    Nyjer Morgan

I know I’m leaving some people out, but still. This is not an impressive lineup of potential bats.

I might go a little nuts and try to pry Tejada off the O’s … he’s old but maybe he gets excited about returning to the Bay Area plus chilling with Panda, Uribe et. al.

  6. uncle joe mccarthy says:

bochy and sabean…the only combo who thinks moving a player up in the order will cure his batting woes

    Stoogery Recap

The first month and 24 games of the season are over. The Giants are 14-10. That’s one game better than 2005,2006,2007 when they were at 13-11. Last year they were 12-12, a two game swing from this year. In spite of the spin and nice 7-2 start thanks to a 3 game sweep of the Galveston Astros, the Giants are playing .500 ball since the 7-2 start; and thats while playing all but 9 of their games at home. About what one would expect from a a one-dimensional team. So besides boring, they are again, average.

Sabean’s big off-season moves? The reason he gets a 2 year contract extension? The GM is concerned with the big club almost exclusively. This is where the GM makes his bones. So lets take a look at Sabean’s 5 2010 Free-Agent gems so far.

Grade D-Mark DeRosa: Still nagged by the pre-existing wrist injury that rendered him useless to the Cards and why they jettisoned him. OPS .607/OPS+ 60. The only reason Sabean doesn’t get an F for the DeRosa signing, is because in spite of not being able to hit, he still draws a few walks.

Grade FFred Sanchez: LOL. Nuff Said.

Grade CAudrey Huff: While he’s OPSing at .839/+123 overall, he splits out at .649/+84 on the road in 18 fewer plate appearances. This just adds to my suspicion that some Giants hitters are being fed tipped pitches at home. No evidence, just some mighty strong swings from guys as if they knew what and where certain pitches were coming. No power. No defense.

Grade CGuillermo Mota: 9.1 non-leveraged innings. One earned run. What-the-fuck-ever. A toss-up between social security eligible mop-up pen guy and bat-boy as to who is going to have a bigger impact on win-loss record.

Grade FBrad Wellemeyer: Sabean let Penny go so he could sign this Brett Tomko clone. The second of the two Cardinal cast-offs signed to lucrative contracts by Stooge. Last year, this stealthy Cy Young candidate posted up a fucking stellar 5.89 ERA while being the only Cardinals starter to be on the mound for more Cardinal losses than wins. Obviously something Stooge values highly. A predisposition to wasting opportunities.

Apparently even Brucey Dumbfuck has realized that this guy is rocket fuel waiting for ignition, figuring it would be a better use of resources to skip Bradybunch’s turn, and let Lincecum open in Miami on his normal 5 days rest. It only took Dumbfuck a month to determine that an off-day is an opportune time to skip the 5 hole in the rotation. Especially when the 5-hole is being filled by the inept ghosts of Brett Tomko-Matt Morris-Jamey Wright.

Meanwhile Brad Penny is 3-1 with a 1.56 ERA/1.183 and averaging a little under nine strike-outs per inning.

Bengie Molina and Eli Whiteside have combined to throw out a fantastical astounding supersonically awesome 5 runners! …In 30 attempts. For those of you keeping track at home, and from the attendance figures at Payphone Amusement Park, you’re not; that means 5 out of every 6 batters who know what the hell they are doing on the basepaths, are converting bbs and singles into runners in scoring position. I don’t know where this ranks in terms of other clubs. I do know, that at any level, from Little League on up, it is atrocious and should cause great embarrassment. I don’t know whose fault it is, pitchers or catchers, but either way its a breakdown in fundamental baseball…something that is endemic at almost every level of this organization run by The Stooge. And because there is so much else wrong with this never-ending parade of forgettable journeymen hacksters, fatboys, and sycophants, it barely gets noticed. That is the depth of non-performance that The Stooge has taken this organization.

They are one injury to Lincecum away from total MLB irrelevance. Three seasons into the so-called “post-Bonds era” which Sabean promised would bring new and incredibly talented impact free agents to the Giants. They are a two game swing over .500 despite playing 2/3 of their games at home.

    I am not impressed.

    • uncle joe mccarthy says:

good analysis, except bumko 2.0 was signed to a minor league contract, so he isnt making much

that was done so sabean could afford to bring back bengie, a guy who only one other team was in the bidding for and who is now contemplating retirement at seasons end

      • +mia says:

A little under a million is double minimum wage. Lucrative yes. Extravagent no. If the guy was paying the Giants to pitch it would still be a bad deal.

I’m like you. It just stuns me the stupidity and willful misfires Stooge makes.

        • JPT says:

Too bad this team underperformed its run differential, thanks to the horrific showing in SD and the crushing blown save vs. PHI. Would’ve been nice to really capitalize in April.

As poor as Tomko was, at least we can fairly recall that 6 of his final 8 starts in 2004 were insanely great. What a push that 2004 team made, despite another heartbreaking finish on the final weekend. Ha, Tomko credited a sports psychologist with his late-season turnaround…and then he turned in a shameful 2005 season.

          • +mia says:

I was just going back through some of that season. The holdovers from Bake’s years were awesome. Bonds, Snow, Schmidt,

Bonds OPS 1.422/OPS+ 263. A .609 OBP Thats right. An On Base Percentage of over 60 fucking percent and a SLG of .812. His OPS+ of 263 is approximately 4.5 times that of the current squatter and Cardinals-castoff, DeRosa in left field being paid $6million per for two years to impersonate a scarecrow. Pathetic.

Snow OPS 958/OPS+146 With a .529 SLG second only to Bonds. JT was greatly overlooked that season

Schmidt ran out an era+ of 136.

And what did Sabean bring to the table? The year of the “two players for the price of one.” Kent gone, replaced by Durham and Alfonso

            Kent in Houston 27 jacks A 348 OBP, a .531SLG and a .880OPS/122+
Durham did all right: an .848 OPS and a 112 OPS+
            Alfonso .757 OPS and 95 OPS+
            And lest we forget,

            Mr. Team Melenoma:

Mr. Double Play A.J Fuckwatski. 27 DPs. A limp-dicked .729 OPS/ a pathetic 86+ a fucked head case, and probably one of the most disliked Giants since Armando Benitez.

The cool thing about that team is that they played 10 games over .500 down the stretch only to have Felipe Alou overly fuck with the pen at the end. He absolutely destroyed whatever was left of the World Series team with his bullshit meddling and overwrought sensitivities.

            They still haven’t recovered.

            • JPT says:

Bond walked 232 times that season despite missing 23 starts (not games, but starts). The only other player to walk 170 times in a season was Ruth, with 170 exactly.

Think about it. Bonds was on base 61% of the time. He even had a terrible month of May in 2004. And he finished that season with a 1 for 15 stretch from the plate, after injuring himself while running out a ninth-inning infield single against Gagne. That was the second-to-last Sunday of the season when he hurt himself. The same game Snow called “[the most mentally exhausting game]” he’d ever played in. And that came one day after Feliz hit a late grand-slam to beat the Dodgers. Man that ’04 team came close. But they fucked it up late, just like every Giants team did in the previous six seasons (except ’99, when we just weren’t as good as Arizona).

  8. PCLmccoveyfan says:

Did y’all see that our centerfielder and Sabean darling Aaron Rowand made the New York Times this morning? Dan Rosenchek’s analysis of Ryan Howard’s big new contract included this side assessment of Rowand’s former place in the Phillies line up behind Howard:
…….”During his (Howard’s) first two full seasons, he was usually followed in the Phillies’ lineup by the punchless Aaron Rowand, leading to a large number of intentional walks. But once the team began putting sluggers in the fifth slot — Pat Burrell in 2008, and a mix of Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez in 2009 — Howard’s free passes plummeted, taking his on-base percentage with them.” New York Times, May 2, 2010.
“Punchless”? Useless is more like it and a classic Sabean free agent signing that keeps giving to Giants fans of all ages.

    • uncle joe mccarthy says:

here is what i dont get

almost everyone goes to have at least one rehab start after being placed on the dl…rowand is not a superstar, yet his rehab start ended up being the 3rd game of a rather important series

not only that, but he was put at leadoff and proceeded to k the first 2 times up on 6 pitches…flailing away like a busher

not only that, but he lackadaisically caught a fly ball allowing the man at first to tag up to go to second….now when does that ever happen on a rather shallow fly to center

never mind that it appears the league has now caught on that our pitchers wont hold you at first

i like the durty one…but dang…how does a lefty not even attempt at holding runners?

never mind that despite a well rested pen, bochy in his wisdom put in medders with 2 on and 2 out…and that freak proceeded to walk a man and then give up 2 singles….he wouldnt have even got out of the inning were it not for some bad base running by the rox

      bochy is a fucking retard

  9. Robert says:

Actually, that was outside the scope of your “since 2005″ limit. Sorry.

    • +mia says:

I deliberately left out 2004 because of that. That one trade is the one that everybody remembers and is talked about to the point of the ramifications have lost their impact, like somebody saying”fuck” over and over again in the same sentence, because after about the 17th time, saying “fuck” loses its fucking ability to put additional emphasis on ones pique…if you get my fucking drift :)

And I think sometimes that because of that, and the focus on the useless and reckless free-agent spending, he gets a pass on his abysmal trade record; which believe it or not have garnered even less help, than his fucked up free-agent acquisitions. His trades have essentially been mulitple failures not because he got fleeced early and often, but because the Giants, under his Baseball Operations, have never had anybody worth a shit that he could afford to deal.

And he still doesn’t. Fuck people, don’t take my word for it, the market place has determined the worth of Giants players over the last several years and the market place has thumbed their collective noses at the second-hand goods that Sabean has collected for his annual garage sale.

I simply do not know when the fairy fucking tale believers are going to wake up and realize that as Gloria Steinhem said about Oakland: “There is no there, there”; it is thus with Sabean’s ability to put together a championship caliber ball club: “There is no there, there”.

He has all the capitol he needs. He has the freedom of independent thinking on his transactions. He has a compliant media to cover his ass. He has an almost unlimited supply of rapturous, to the point of spinelessness, undemanding season ticket holding quiche eaters whose primary desire is to have “a great experience” at the ballpark, and he still can’t come any closer than third place, in a 5 team division.

If that was me, I think I would shoot all the mirrors in my office and house out, so I wouldn’t have to look at myself in the face. But then again, I’m not a self-absorbed economic sociopath more concerned with where my next millions are coming from rather than winning a championship.

  10. Robert says:

Let’s not forget A.J. Pierzynski from the Twins for Nathan, Liriano & Bonser. That trade alone should have cost Sabean his job.

  11. Peter G says:

I’m not sure that I agree we could get Prince Fielder for Bumgardner et al., but I do agree that our rotation is the best in all of baseball, and I disagree that by trading Cain it would become merely average.

There are teams that will be frantic for pitching as the season progresses. The Red Sox, the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks, and yes; the Brewers, are already sipping from empty canteens and know it.

Meanwhile, our offense sputters occasionally, but is getting the job done.

Let the trade come to us, be patient, and it might indeed turn out to be Prince Fielder for MadBum et al. Maybe not even all that al.

    • +mia says:

Given Sabean’s history of midseason trades that make him look like a drunk getting rolled on a NYC subway, why would you reasonably hope for him to make any kind of a trade that would benefit the Giants?

Here’s a list of the players that Brian Sabean has acquired in trades sine 2005.

      Carlos Hines
      LaTroy Hawkins
      Doug DeVore
      Alex Sanchez
      Randy Winn
      Kelvin Pichardo
      Ben Cox
      Dusty Bergman
      Steve Finley
      Shea Hillenbrand
      Vinnie Chulk
      Randy Messenger
      Freddy Sanchez
      Ryan Garko
      Rajai Davis
      Travis Denker
      Darren Ford
      Steve Hammond
      Hector Correa

That is it. The sum total of Brian Sabean’s trades. I’m not even talking about the disastorous free-agent signings. Just the trades. And I’m not even talking about what he gave up in return; just what the Giants received in return. Was there a difference maker there? Randy Wiinn had a good 5 week run in 2005, so thats about as close as one could state that particular trade actually benefited the Giants. And that was almost 5 years ago.

So the question is this. What the fuck does anybody see in Sabean that would lead anybody to reasonably believe he is capable of pulling off any kind of trade that would not be laughable as irrelevant or incompetent.

Projecting transactions with this asshole running things is as futile as pissing into a strong wind and hoping to not get your shoes wet

Well, here’s the thing. If “balls ‘n ears” had re-signed Penny instead of the pitiful protoplasmic morass aka Freddy the Freeloader and not been so goddamned quick to lose patience with Correia before last season, instead of throwing 9 million at Randy Johnson to spend summer vacation with his kids, then the Giants would have something of interest to interest some pitching-starved franchise like Milwaukee.

But they don’t. Never will as long as Sabean is around. The best that fans can hope for is to have the Giants hang on the fringe of contention with what they have, pray for a miracle, or better yet, spend their life savings on a lottery ticket.

Soon as they hit the road again, and are no longer getting pitches tipped, they’ll revert back to their shitty ways.

Nice thought John, but the Giants don’t really have a lot of trading chips, other than Posey to make a trade of this magnitude, unless they give up part of their great starting staff. Fresno’s roster is not exactly full of Jason Heywoods, and the pitching is mediocre at best, unless the Brewers regard Pucetas and Martinez as aces. Besides I don’t trust Sabean to make any kind of deal that makes sense, and ownership is not as concerned about winning a championship as much as filling the park and making a buck.

I doubt anyone would accept Bumgarner as the centerpiece of a big-deal trade after this spring’s meltdown.

    john,

to part with fielder, the crue is gonna ask for more than madbaum and a few prospects….they are gonna want either cain or the dirty one thrown in the mix

    sorry, but it wont fly

to get that bat, you just went from best rotation in the nl to avg, with very few options left in the minors (for at least a couple of years)

now last night they were attempting to pimp hacker as a future star

the kid is 27, has been injury plagued and looks to be an org guy right now

maybe good for a spot start here and there, but replacing cain or sanchez? i dont think so

this is what happens when you spend your career doing knee jerk trades instead of saving up for the big one

of course, the last big trade that sabean made blew up in his face

    anyway…the prince aint coming here

you know what kind of player i would like? an ey jr clone….that kid is great

been following him since his days in the sally…he is gonna be better than his pops

  16. Robert says:

Fielder’s agent is Scott Boras, who scares the crap out of Sabean.
