Well, the "years" you're referring to are years in which the team has enormous resources tied up in mediocrity.

The Zito contract is different only in scale. The same mistakes are being made that have hamstrung this team since Sabean's been here. $9 million per is too much for a guy that is only marginally more productive than Burriss. Look at the numbers, Renteria was great.... ten years ago. He scored 69 runs last season for an offensive juggernaut that out-scored the Giants by 180 runs.

Sure, Burriss isn't great, either. But he makes $400,000 per. At that price, he's a bargain. At $9 million per, all you're getting with Renteria is the knowledge that he's actually been around for a while. It's a waste of money for a team that uses that very excuse to explain why they can't sign the best free agent hitters year after year.

<a>

What? Since when did we time travel back to the 1970's?

And this contract isn't comparable to the Zito signing at all. I'm not a fan of Renteria, but the Giants have absolutely nothing (and I mean nothing) coming up through the system at shortstop and two years is low risk. The Zito signing was an atrocious waste because it tied him to the team for seven freaking years. It isn't money that hurts teams in free agency, it's the years.

I like the Howry and Affeldt deals. Short term, not much risk, high likelihood they will improve a wretched bullpen. Romo, Hinshaw, Valdez, Matos, etc. will all get plenty of work and we'll get to see who sticks. Wilson showed impressive stuff last year, I think he'll continue to improve. Renteria is a bit of a desperation move--we have no one to play SS everyday. They obviously don't think Burriss is ML-caliber and they have no one else on the depth chart. If it is for two years, I can live with it, despite his obviously declining skills. Renteria is a place-holder until they can develop or acquire a youngster. As far as $9 million is concerned, the Giants have plenty of money, and I expect Nuke-em will start tossing it around any day now. We got used to Magowan and Sabean telling us they had paryroll limits and etc., which was clearly B.S.
