John,

Feel free to post any time soon.

Been posting all year that the NL West will have a sub-.500 winner...even the Gigantes have an outside shot. Joke as it may seem...it actually helps NL West teams at the trading deadline. I realize Omar is a classy guy with a great legacy...but you cannot keep putting him in the line-up. Anybody else would get their outright release. He can no longer catch up to a fastball...and that spells death in the bigs. Sad to watch. We've all been ripping Zito and Durham...but the 5 mil on Vizquel is ranking up there with the worst contracts this year. Durham on the other hand might actually get something...and Aurillia is the surprise of the year. Aurillia is too valuable with his versatility to trade...now is the time to move Durham.

Knowing Sabean...he will be a buyer, thinking this is the Gigantes year to win it. Hate to admit it....but anything can happen in the wild wild worst.

It's possible that it's a polite way of saying the Giants have tested the waters behind the scenes and Peterson told them there's no fucking way in hell I'll do it.

If you think about it its a pretty risky move for Peterson. There's a small chance he could help Zito return to form and he'd be hailed as a genius and could then choose whatever job he wanted. There's a greater chance that he can take a 2-11 Zito and turn him into a 4-11 pitcher.

Peterson's reputation isn't tarnished because the Met's cleaned house. Unless he really wants to manage and isn't getting a shot why take the risk?

Toni,

Sorry, but enough of Zito. He does not even have minor league stuff anymore. Totally agree with mia's sentiments. Major league hitters adjust...and sit back and wait on Zito's breaking ball and change up(gravity ball). Change up is only effective with 90+ mph fastball...or at least a pitcher who has command of his other pitches. GM's who deal with Boras deserve everything they get. How about Andrew Jones...who is as fat as his contract. This organization deserves all that is coming. Whatever deal they made with Selig to completely strip Bonds from anything to do with the Gigantes will continue to haunt...this is a curse that will not go away any time soon. The Gigantes fans who continue to buy into the marketing...well, all I can say is you have nothing better to do with your time and money.

You need to take off those 3-D glasses and tune in to reality. This is a horrible team in a bad division. The NL West could have a sub-.500 division chump...and the radio call of Dave Flemming is as bad as the play. He sucks worse than the Gigantes.

Must cut this short before I go into a rant. The only way this organization will make the proper moves is if the fans actually make a statement and quit paying astronomical prices for non-mlb caliber play. In the real world...season ticket holders would be able to get their money back for non-performance clauses. Nice venue...bad product...and getting worse. No wonder John rarely posts anymore.

Play the kids daily...period.

Keep posting mia...

Well said Toni. Zito was often excellent and never below-average during his entire tenure in Oakland. Even last year he posted an ERA+ of 98, meaning he was a hair's breadth away from being league average.

I don't mean to make excuses for Zito, nor do I mean to imply that it was wise signing him. But I just don't buy that he was some sort of artificial creation whose success depended entirely on selling his soul to the devil (or other such means). He's hardly the first player to experience a steep decline in performance, and he won't be the last.

I think the best course of action would be to send him down to the minors, a la Dontrelle Willis. Let him pitch against inferior hitters and get his confidence back. If hiring Peterson helps, then get him. As John wrote, they've invested too much money in the guy to not consider anything that might get Zito back on track.

this is from BP (fwiw):

NL Rumors and Rumblings: While some in the Giants front office would like to see Rick Peterson, fired as the Mets’ pitching coach Monday, brought in as a consultant to work with former protégé Barry Zito, GM Brian Sabean is apparently not keen on the idea.

I post on another board and actually said this.. :) I think absolutely the Giants should hire Peterson as a consultant or pitching assistant or something. Peterson was the only successful pitching coach to work with Zito, for one thing I believe Peterson really understands him. And the one thing he doesn't allow is for Zito to tinker. He wouldn't let Zito change anything, and Zito has gotten into a lot of problems trying to tinker with his mechanics. Each tinkering has led to a decrease in effectiveness it sems.

And as eloquent as you are Mia+, I think you're a little off the mark with Zito. I just can't see him conning/bluffing his way through the first 7 years of his career. I just don't see that happening at this level. I'm certainly not a scout or coach, just a fan, and I don't have your way with words, but Zito was an elite pitcher the first 4 years of his career and a very good one for the next 3. I don't think anybody could have predicted such a drastic decline since signing on with the Giants. He had been declining slowly, but I thought going to the NL would actually halt that decline and his numbers would improve back to his early years. But obviously that hasn't happened.

His strength is in his unusally low BABIP against right handed hitters (sort of a reverse split) which really relies on his ability to snap his curveball. That, more than the velocity loss, I think is why he's struggling so much.

Anyway yes I think the Giants should take a flyer on Peterson, though the whole reason he left Oakland supposedly is because he wanted to be closer to his family on the East Coast. But that may have been a smoke screen, he and Macha didn't exactly get along. Understandable since Macha was/is an idiot and Peterson is smart, but a little out there.

If anybody is interested here's some good articles on the mystery that is Zito (these are from last year so it doens't apply to his appalling year he's having so far):

Scott S.

Your first post says it all. Prioritizing contract over substance is more disruptive to the players than it is to fans. Ironically, MSM frothed all over the naive public in promulgating the canard that Bonds personality was somehow a determinate factor in Giants suckiness, and that Zito's, nice guy status, contributed to clubhouse harmony. I hate to break this to the sports op-ed freaks, and sports talk radio weenies and their sycophant callers, nothing could be further from the truth. A guy in the lineup that gets you better pitches to hit, puts enthusiastic fans in the seats, wins you ballgames with one swing of the bat, and keeps your mistakes, and your pecadillos out of the news is a hell of a lot more contributory and desirable than a loser who takes you out of ballgames every 5th day. A guy who leaves you on defense with interminable numbers of hi-stress, rhythm-busting innings 35 times per years. A guy who is a daily reminder of everything bad about the financial aspects of MLB and Sports Agents like Scott Boras. A guy who has now responsible for his own media circus in the clubhouse. Not because he has been relentessly hounded by a bloodthirsty media bound on personal vendettas, but because he is a horrible excuse for a ballplayer.

Even the wayward Tigers saw fit to send Dontrelle Willis to Single A. And Willis actually has innate talent.

Rick Peterson nor Jesus and his 12 homies for that matter, is going to make a shit of a difference to Zito. He has never had a superior natural throwing motion. Short of HGH, Anabolic Steroids, and a brain transplant. This is not micro surgery or voodoo where there is some secret resolution to the horrid steaming pile that is masquerading in Giants number 75. He has no place to go since he never had much physical talent to begin with. He is 6-4 and throws like he is 5-4. He was and is and always will be an artificial pitcher, the creation of over-tutoring and over-coaching at the behest of stage parents. Two high schools and three colleges in 5 years ought to tell you that enough coaches saw him to come to the same conclusion. He was and is the MLB equivalent of the Manchurian Candidate. A marginal talent carefully programmed by others and when things short circuited, an automaton with no natural physical resources with which to draw upon.

In many ways, I see Zito's continued embarrassing performances as self-inflicted retribution for the way the Giants succumbed to Bud Selig and MSM by dumping Bonds. The Giants and Barry Zito deserve each other. Pasty faced pussies in the front office and on the pimple. A mono-toned company stooge in a Size 12.5 lid in the dugout writing the 70s redux lineup out night after night with guys who couldn't score in a whorehouse with a wheelbarrow full of c-notes.

This franchise turned out to be what I predicted 3 years ago -- The Forty Niners in tight pants.

Totally agree grega. I'm not saying give up any of the young guns(Lincecum,Cain,Sanchez,Hinshaw, or Wilson). The Gigantes should be sellers...not buyers. Unfortunately, Winn will have to be packaged in any deal. I was just bringing up Beltre...since it might be worth a shot. Obviously, the Gigantes are in a rebuilding mode for the next couple years...but, they need to support this decision by playing the kids. Not just once a week..but daily. We all know Durham wont fetch much. We're giving up three innings a game by palying Vizquel and Castillio...as well as speed on the bases.

No one's talking playoffs...just to be competitive would be a start. Just for attendance reasons alone. Could easily be less than half full by August.

Totally agree grega. I’m not saying give up any of the young guns(Lincecum,Cain,Sanchez,Hinshaw, or Wilson). The Gigantes should be sellers…not buyers. Unfortunately, Winn will have to be packaged in any deal. I was just bringing up Beltre…since it might be worth a shot. Obviously, the Gigantes are in a rebuilding mode for the next couple years…but, they need to support this decision by playing the kids. Not just once a week..but daily.
