Nonetheless, SYWF must be given some measure of proper due here, classless and boorish though he may be: The move was blocked by MLB, and that was what opened the door for Magowan and his partners to make an offer that, to my memory, was a bit smaller than what the Florida team was offering.

There is no way the Giants would still be in San Francisco without Magowan & Co. Lurie was not going to spend the money needed to make the team competitive, and he wasn’t going to build a ballpark.Without more talent and a new park, the franchise would have gone through the fire-sale phase before being moved or contracted.

It would have been ugly. “Fire sale” barely begins to describe it. The team would eventually have been bought for pennies on the dollar, stuck in Candlestone, cellar-dwelling, alienated fan base, no talent on the field, etc. etc. Magowan, Burns and Co. saved and revitalized the franchise.
