Well…. It’s hard to say. We’re in last place, we’re the worst offense in the game, we play pretty shitty defense…. In many ways, we’re bad.
On the other hand, we’ve got 8 wins in the first 19 games, and Tim Lincecum has been simply outstanding. Some of the other pitchers have been pretty damn good as well, Yabu, Valdez, Wilson, Walker, Taschner…. so, we’ve thrown the ball pretty well.
On the pitching front, I’d like to mention that it’s possible that Lowry’s injury is really bad, like, even career-threatening bad. You don’t hear that too often, but it needs to be considered. The injury itself seems like nothing, except it’s not. Anytime you have an injury to your pitching arm, and it turns out to be one that almost no one’s ever had, and then you start suffering setbacks…. well, it ain’t good, that’s for sure.
And then there’s Bowker. What a start, what a find. Can he continue? Unknown, at this point. But, at this point, he’s the best we’ve got. Here’s hoping.

Hell, Correia’s been okay too. Still should have traded a valuable Lowry at the end of last season or during the winter (i.e. before he was hurt). I was watching them tonight, but Zito’s unbearable to me + it’s the D-backs’ feed (Mark Grace just lauded Zito for how great of a pitcher he is).
Fred Lewis too.
Well…I think most of us were a little optimistic that other GMs would be fooled into thinking Lowry’s won-loss record for a bad team was a better indicator of his quality than his lousy K/BB ratio.
I never looked at his won-loss record. He’s been a decent and relatively durable lefty (note: relatively) and teams like Seattle and Detroit and Tampa Bay WERE looking for such a player. It’s too late now.
sanchez has been good too
and if lowry is out all season or more…..can they finally fire sabean?
my god, he coulda been trade bait last year
Don’t forget about Fred Lewis. He’s the one who’s really sparking the “offense.” I wish the team would stop pushing him to steal bases when he’s just not that great of a base stealer (though he’s a good base runner).
Nice little stat: the Giants have won every Tim Lincecum start so far.
Also, does anyone think Bochy’s a douche for calling out Velez, even though most replays showed Velez being safe and the Giants are supposed to be running more this season or whatever?
bochy is a douche for many things…including tearing apart the rooks and staying mum with the vets
Any chance they could tell Richie and Durham that their services have been appreciated and their checks will be deposited on time?
Is it worth the wasted AB’s going forward on the (slim) chance of establishing any trade value?
I think no & no.
But I’m hoping.
And even if they DO establish trade value, Sabean will probably keep them for a chance to compete! lol…
While I’m excited by Fred Lewis and Bowker, and of course Lincecum and Cain… holy mother of God, Zito just keeps getting worse and worse. Is there any sort of opt-out from his contract whatsoever, at least a little? Or is all 126 million guaranteed? This is on pace to be the worst contract in the history of SPORTS, much less baseball.
So far I actually like this season. Did you hear that Larry Baer? It’s a rebuilding year and I’m more interested in it then I ever was about the stupid all-star game.
I didn’t expect them to get to 8 wins till May and some of these young guys are performing well so I’m not that upset. Sanchez is pitching well. He’s a kid so he’s gonna be lights out for three innings and freaking awful for two. He’ll figure it out. Zito’s taking a pounding in all the games that the Giants were gonna take a pounding in anyway so who cares.
I go back and forth though when I see Durham and Aurilla’s carcasses out there but in a normal rebuilding year management needs to play these vets a bit more early to both showcase them as trade bait and so they buy into grooming the kids later in the season. Don’t know if any of that will actually happen, managements track record ain’t good.
At least Roberts and Vuzquel are safely tucked away on the DL.
And with Lowry since management blew it in terms of trading him last season the best thing is to shelf him till the All Star Break. He’s not going to help the Giants and he’ll only hurt his value more by pitching before then.
Lowry was a good risk at the time he signed his deal. I can’t fault Sabes & Co. for that one (they surely have enough blame to shoulder!). Valdez sure made a nice comeback from TJ surgery, perhaps Lowry’s problem is as “fixable” as Merkin’s. I’m glad Lewis is doing well, I felt he earned a shot last year. I hope Matt Cain pitches well tonight. Lincecum has been great, and we need our other “phenom” to get back in the groove. Losing is OK if fans see youth and potential. That means the deadweight has to go, even if we eat the dollars (Aurilia, Durham, Roberts) or trade semi-marketable reasonably productive veterans (Winn, Molina) for more youngsters.
