yeah, I mean, there are good shortstops and bad shortstops, but how bad could he be? I think there's great high-level debate (said with some cynicism) about what to do with Durham - if he hits .300 with 15 homers by the AllStarbreak, is there anyone who would really want him?

Got the baseball prospectus yearbook thing the other day... not a pretty picture for them Giants. They're pretty critical of the team throwing away money on free agents - pointing out that Bonds' salary really has nothing to do with "our payroll is too high to get A-plus free agents". I think that's really showing up with all the "what the hell do we do with them" veterans. The last home-grown Giant to make the all-star team was Royce Clayton in '88. What a legacy.

Sounds like every team had a much lower opinion of Lowry than Sabean - seems to me that if you can't trade a guy for what you want, maybe you're asking too much? Sad sad state of affairs that Righetti apparently had no idea that Lowry was injured. I really have to wonder if he should be gone. Bochy seems pretty harmless (with all the pros and cons of that), but Righetti... the last the team needs is for him to ruin Cain or Lincecum. or Sanchez. or anybody else.

Methinks, in response to the column, that what is happening is the chickens coming home to roost. Not looking so good once the "distraction" was shown the door. I think Sabean owes his job to that distraction.
