Hey John, looking forward to your take on the Cabrera and D-Train trade. It strikes me as yet another example of how the Giants are suffering from the ineptitude of the front office. Without any prospects to trade, they're sitting on their hands again, and seem completely out of the loop because of it. Just Saturday, Sabean said he thought the Marlins asking price for Cabrera was too high, and now they seem to be interested in trading Lincecum for Alex effing Rios. This organization is simply terrible.

I wonder too if the Boss has gotten all Connie Mack on us in the past few years - "Brian, get King Kelly - now!".... his handing over the reigns has been a bit... clouded.

ah.... *grumblegrumble* the yankees will just buy the pennant somehow anyway *grumblegrumble*.....

honestly, a very common thing in business is to throw away money when you have a lot of it.... I know the playoffs are a crapshoot, etc etc, but with (by far) the highest payroll every year, Brian Chasman sure is a lousy GM.

As a Twins fan, I like how the auction for Santana is setting up. It appears that the bounty could be substantial. Plus, we've got Joe Nathan ready to move. He's under contract in 2008 for $6 million. There's going to a lot of young talent heading to Minneapolis.

The Yankees should only go for Santana if they can get away with keeping both Cano and Chamberlain. Everyone else in their farm system should be expendable. I would hope that they could dump Wang too, since he is a 3rd starter at best on a good team, not an ace.

I think the Dodgers or Mets are good candidates to get Santana, they both have the positional prospects that the Twins are looking for.

John: Very sloppy, not knowing that Beckett was a trade and not a free agency issue. I expect much better of you.

At the time, the Yankees had nothing to offer Florida that would have come close to what Sox offered. And while deal for Santana would help now (at huge expense - would cost $25M/year over 5-6 years, plus probably another $10M in luxury tax - it still doesn't cure the lack of fresh position players.

And what would Santana cost? Melky Cabrera is a given. Yanks say they won't deal Joba, but Twins would want Phil Hughes (Kennedy doesn't impress me nearly as much) and more. Santana is a premium player, so they'd better expect to pay a premium.

Worst part for Yanks is that they CAN NOT let Red Sox get him. Picture a 1-2 of Santana and Beckett. Then picture the Steinbrenners having a fit as Sox, with a deeper farm system that has real position players waiting in the wings and isn't paying $1.40 for every $1 it spends on salaries, ringing up a bunch of titles.
