Yes, there's enough talent in our pitching staff to turn the ship around faster than some people think. The Giants have lost A LOT of games by only 1 or 2 runs (not that this excuses how awful they've been to watch).

I agree with almost everything John writes about this team, including the criticism of Sabean, whose last good deal was the Jason Schmidt trade six years ago. They've been all but unwatchable this year due to the sludge in the batting order that surrounds Bonds.

That said, I was shocked to realize that after last night's win in Colorado, the Giants have been outscored by only 13 runs on the season, due primarily to the fine work of the pitching staff. Given that the expected W-L of such a team is actually five games better than where the Giants are now, is it reasonable to think that they're not as far from contending as it feels like they are and that some decent offseason signings (albeit from a GM who's shown no such tendencies in recent years) could put the team back in contention in '08? After all, the D-backs lead the NL West this morning despite being outscored by 33 runs on the season so far.

One of the joys of relegation (i.e. world futbol) is that incompetance or lack of talent (or preparation for the future) is met with consequences. The Giants can "afford" to be mediocre for a few years because there are few consequences and because most Giants fans don't realize that the Giants have already been mediocre for a couple of season...thus likely giving the club the patience of a few off-seasons.

It's a bit arrogant to assume that the Giants will just "get better" and that the rest of baseball or the rest of the NL West is just going to stand by and let 'em get better. Sure the young pitching is good, but they are too in LA and even San Diego. The hitters? Ahh...check out the Diamondbacks or the Loney-Kemp-Martin Dodgers. Free Agent $? I don't have confidence in the Giants' ability or foresight in free agent spending.

I don't want the Giants to turn into Notre Dame (or Michigan or the Yankees), where any loss is met with an excuse or a crazy fanbase that wants everyone fired. But, the club could use to employ a bit of toughness in its front office. I mean, is it really so great that the front office was so "nice" to Zito that they lured him away from the "arrogant" Mets?

Pretend you don't like the Giants. Pretend you like the Dodgers and the Dodgers are constructed like this team...you'd laugh. As a Giants fan? You'd cry.
