The question I have always had about the argument is why it is considered admirable that someone born with the innate talent to play major league baseball works hard and makes it to the majors, while someone without as much natural talent is willing to not only work hard, but also is willing to endanger their health and life (if you believe the steriods fear mongerers) to have a baseball baseball career is a pariah. I wanted to play in the majors, and I managed to keep the dream till i was about 13 and discovered that no matter how much batting practice i took I was not born with quick enough reflexes to hit a good fastball.

That is really a great piece by Mr. Neel, but your follow-up paragraphs articulate my own feelings almost perfectly. Bonds is villified because he tried too hard, his work ethic was too good. I think the myth of the "off-the-street" athletic hero persists, and we have a hard time coming to terms with the modern professional. We still want to believe that world-class athletes are just regular joes. We don't like knowing that they have to work with a religious devotion to their craft, constantly learning and continually pushing themselves. When Bonds says the record is "not tainted" he is telling the truth: hard work and singular focus made it possible. I think it is a hell of an accomplishment, and it is indeed a shame many choose to disparage it.
