I continue to find it frightening that so many are so naive (and misinformed) about...well...so much.

And if everyone is so concerned about the long term health affects on athletes, doesn't that mean that boxing and FOOTBALL should be outlawed.

Its funny the supposed long term effects of steroids have never been proven. I don't know if anyone saw it, but HBO Real Sports did a story about a year or two ago, about the whole steroids scandal, and Armen Keteyan found out that there's never even been an extensive long term study on the side effects of steroids on athletes. So he went to the source, bodybuilders. The guys who have been using the stuff longer then anyone. All of the ones interviewed didn't have any roid related problems, they concurred that if taken correctly (not abused) and if taken by a fully grown male (not a teen or woman, who's testosterone levels are always in flux) that they wouldn't have any problems. It was a very interesting piece and alternative take on the usual bs banter that comes out of the media.

I think I added this before the update, but now I'm not sure. In any event, it is quite the read, for sure.

That is, I think a subscription required article. The gist? Carroll talked to the guy who makes Bonds' elbow protector. It's custom made and this guy has been measuring Bonds' arm every year with a caliper for the last fifteen years. The results?

<blockquote>"If I made the same brace every year for 12 or more years," Silva said, "it was because there was no size change in Barry's arms."

You read that correctly--the man who not only builds Bonds' brace, but who has taken precision measurements of his arm since 1992, has not seen any increase in the size of Bonds' arm. Point blank, Silva said "there's been no significant change in the size of his arms."</blockquote>

Will Carroll with an interesting piece on how much bigger Bonds' arms have gotten over the <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6557" rel="nofollow">last twelve years</a>.
