You provide more good reasons for why Selig should show up to see Bonds break the HR record. Even though it seems likely that Bonds cheated, if it could be proved then he would be indicted. And Selig played a big part in letting the “steroid era” come to fruition anyway. He should have to suffer and watch the results. Not so fast there John. The government hasn’t leaked a bit. We were led to believe the government was the source of the leaks. That’s because Troy Ellerman, a former Conte defense attorney, had implicated the U.S. Attorney’s office for leaking portions of Barry’s grand jury testimony. In February, Ellerman showed up in San Francisco, tail between legs, and admitted he was the leak:

If anything, the government has taken the high road. As you suggested, I suspect they haven’t indited Barry because there’s not enough evidence against him. That doesn’t mean they’re out to soil his reputation, that means they’re protecting his rights as a citizen. What could the feds possibly stand to gain from leaking evidence suggesting Barry’s guilty when they don’t have a case to charge him with? If anything, this would make them look like incompetent dupes.

Ellerman, is a better target for your hostilities. Tomorrow a federal judge is going to decide whether government sentencing guidelines are too soft for an a-hole of his stature:

I don’t know, I think ya have to give the press a break. I mean, these guys are shrewd thinking, analytical intellectuals. OK, so they were duped on the WMDs, but that was a pretty big story and just where do you find reliable informants these days. OK, so they were a bit slow on the uptake of the Valerie Plame mess, but how were they to know that our very own government was feeding them bogus information.
Calling them star-struck lemmings just seems a bit harsh. I mean a guy (or girl)’s gotta make a living. And there are deadlines. OK, they make a few small mistakes. Hell, I make a few mistakes in my work, too. Just don’t tell my b oss. Or the press.
